Our Response to COVID-19

Buenos Dias! It is finally time! We are going to be releasing our Fall 2020 Conversational Spanish Class Schedule on Wednesday! We have some news! After a lot of thinking, hearing from you, and even quite a bit of prayer... We have decided to only offer virtual Spanish this semester. Many businesses and school districts are making all kinds of changes with very little explanation as to their logic or reasoning behind their decisions. I want to be as open and honest with you as possible regarding why we have made this decision and I hope that you will understand the challenges that we are facing regarding this virus. We realize that we can't make everyone happy, even though we want to! Allow me to explain the reasoning behind our decision. We offer Spanish for elementary-aged kiddos. Research is showing that these children generally don't spread the virus to adults, even though they can get it. There are very few children who get ill from Covid-19. BUT...there are still a lot of unknowns with this situation, and experts are constantly changing their minds (or at least changing what they tell us) regarding risk and spread and recommendations. Many of our students are EPIC students, which in case you don't know, is an online public school allowing parents to homeschool using EPIC materials and guidance. EPIC students have a learning fund that can be used to pay for their Spanish classes at The CASA OKC. Last spring, EPIC decided to not pay for any in-person classes. If Epic chooses to do this again, we wouldn't be able to move that many students to an online platform in the middle of the semester. Especially for classes that are filled with a combination of EPIC and self-pay students. Although I personally (as well as our teachers) do not feel like we would be at great risk of harm from Covid-19, I am not comfortable at all with putting other people at risk if I am wrong. So even though I am a big proponent of personal responsibility and encouraging parents to choose what they feel is best for their children, the logistics of quarantining and cleaning if/when someone in our sphere (children/teachers/parents) contracts Covid-19 is simply too big of a hurdle. So what are we going to do? We are offering 1-on-1 zoom conversational Spanish classes with a native Spanish speaker! The actual schedule will be released on Wednesday where you will be able to sign your child up for specific time slots. Our capacity is reduced because we cannot teach 8-10 children at one time, so there are fewer spots but more time options than ever before. Each class will be 30 minutes in length and you can sign up for 1x/week, 2x/week, or 3x/week, depending on your resources, your time, and how quickly your want your child to pick up Spanish. We will e-mail you optional materials each week for you to complete at home with your child, as well as craft ideas, Youtube videos, etc. All new students will also receive 2 CDs with Spanish songs for your children to sing at home as well as in class! I am confident that this is going to be a great Semester and although I almost can't stand the thought of not seeing your children's faces in person each week, I am excited for the 1-on-1 aspect of these classes, as well as the freedom for families to be able to sign up for the most convenient time for their kiddos! More information about cost/schedule/discounts, etc. will be coming on Wednesday. We adore our CASA families and hope that you are as excited as we are for this new chapter! Oh...I almost forgot... We are also offering Preschool and Adult classes!!! More on that soon, so please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
